CUSTOM TILE: Vertical in Texas

Mon, Jan 12th, 2015 I met Jill & John in Denver, Colorado but they live in Texas. We began our discussion about creating custom tile wall art for their Guest Room in Colorado, but once they got home to Texas, the real details began.

This tile art piece will be 30" w x 56" h as seen taped out on the wall below. Sun cascades in from the right side where an outside wall painted blue violet stands. The living room is a light sage color.

This Texas home is characterized by artwork that is Asian evocative or at least calming and still. Jill & John were drawn to both my Sargasso carved series as well as my Nature-Scape ideas. The first custom tile art piece I'm creating is a larger version of the Green Sargasso they saw on my website.

It took about 4 days; now mural #1 is complete. Here you can see the drawing, forming, carving & cleaning of the first hand made tile art work.

While those tiles are drying on the shelves, I began working on the second custom tile art, a Nature-Scape rendition, including botanicals and other inspirations from our discussions.

Glazing tiles is an art in and of itself. The complicated part of glazing is that the color you see is not the color that appears after the firing - so you have to know and remember how things change and what changes them.

For instance, slightly more or less glaze over a stain and the color changes. Similarly, slightly more or less density of the stain and the color changes. Colors and glazing are an intuitive and involved process that takes 2-3 days on the table, but years to master.

Here are some process shots of glazing the second custom wall art tile. Both tile pieces are fired and framing is underway. #2 is complete and hanging on my outside wall. #1 is done also.

Jill and John made their selection. Of the 2 custom tile art pieces I made, they selected the second one, which is named Texas Essence. This custom tile wall art blends beautifully into the design of their guest room.
